Girls Who Code

Being female in the programming industry, we are currently outnumbered by the number of men in the industry. Girls Who Code is a non-profit organization that is trying to even out the ratio of men to women in computer science around the world! The founder Reshma Saujani is an American lawyer passionate about closing the gender gap in the technology industry. She is currently one of the most influential women in the fight for women's rights in the technology industry. Reshma currently lives in New York with her husband and son. She has been an ongoing activist her whole life and also has some books out for publication to read.

“Girls Who Code is more than an international non-profit. We are a movement. ”          ~ Reshma Saujani, Founder of Girls Who Code

This organization is not letting the pandemic affect its goals! The girls who work here are constantly holding virtual sessions to give information to incoming women in the industry. Even just two days ago, July 23rd, 2021, the Girls Who Code Youtube account posted a virtual lecture called "Accessibility in Tech".

Emily Moss, Director of Girls Who Code, was monitoring the virtual event. There were three women speakers. Sasha Diamond, the Director of Web Experiences at New York Life Insurance Company, Lisa Mcgarthwaite, a user experience designer, and Maria Garcia, a user experience designer, and strategist at Athenahealth. Each of these women goes through their own personal definition of Accessibility and speaks on how it changes the game for different types of user interfaces.

For any woman looking to get into coding or the computer science industry, Girls Who Code is a great outlet for information and free webinars. They are constantly posting on their Youtube with new lectures and guest speakers. They have panels for Q&As and so much more. As a woman in tech, it is a great environment to be a part of and very rewarding.
