Developer Proves CAPTCHAs Can Be Fun

Ever since the introduction of CAPTCHAs many websites have been protected against mass bot attacks and spam, while this does seem to be a good thing for all internet users, many have shown a particular distaste towards the Turing tests. However, as much as users despise them, developers like Google have taken a particular interest in them, even going as far as to release 3 versions of CAPTCHAs. Users have been taking the same old boring tests for years until an independent developer came forth to prove that CAPTCHAs are not mortal enemies, but instead can be fun and less time-consuming.

This web developer who goes by the name Miguel manages to bring back a 90's teen classic and incorporate it into CAPTCHAs. The game in question is none other than the popular first-person shooter, Doom. The premise of the game is to assume the role of the protagonist and shoot through hordes of mutated demon creatures on a spaceship, the game's introduction into the gaming market with its first-person shooter mechanics and newly introduced 3-D graphics boosted the game's popularity even after being rooted in heavy controversy regarding its graphic content and the game went on further to produce nine games within the main series and three spin-offs. Although this small project is not Miguel's first attempt at making CAPTCHAs less of a nightmare for users, it has so far been the one that is the most reasonable. His other attempts, for example, have been doing squats or using the webcam to make funny faces in order to pass.

The CAPTCHA that Miguel had created is fairly simple, requiring no blurry picture staring, or typing a jumble of letters and numbers together. The concept is a short minigame, which consists of shooting four of the demons from the original Doom game within a certain time limit, with an added bonus of funky background music from the original game as well. Users pass once all four demons are killed and are able to try again if they fail.
