Security Breaches

Each day the world gets more and more technologically based and usual processes or tasks that are usually completed offline are starting to be transitioned to an online activity. Data security has always been an issue and as time goes on the risk will only continue to get worse. Data security breaches happen very often and continuously around the world, whether it is a small- or large-scale breach. What exactly is a security breach? A security breach is when an unauthorized user is able to gain access to a database or any specific form of data. That data is then often times used for malicious intent, whether it is towards a company or an individual.

Some examples of big data breaches that have occurred in the past include several companies like Equifax, Yahoo, eBay, Facebook, Marriot Hotels and more. Just these companies alone have led to billions and billions of user and infrastructure data to be leaked. Although not all of the information involved in the breach led to any specific malicious activity, the possibility and likelihood is still very high. These are companies that seem as though they should have some of the top line infrastructure in place to prevent any data breaches, but they are still vulnerable.

How can you protect your data and prevent a data security breach? As with all things there is nothing that is guaranteed but you can take steps to limit the chances. Shredding papers with secure information, using secure websites, not giving out unnecessary information, etc. can all be actionable steps in making information more secure.
