The term "deepfake," also seen as "deep fake," may be new to your vocabulary unless, perhaps, you dabble in cybercrime. "Deepfake" was coined in 2017 by a Reddit user, but it wasn't added to the dictionary until 2020 (Source). Deepfakes are edited media that are used to portray someone doing something that they never did. While editing photos and videos isn’t a new practice, deepfakes are characterized by the intense techniques used to make fake content much more realistic and deceitful. Throughout this semester, I aim to discuss the etymology of the term “deepfake,” the history of deepfake content, and its impact on today’s world.
