The group, Women in Tech in Africa, are coming around to having their annual conference. It has been shifted to online entirely in order to comply with covid-19 regulations, but it is still stronger than ever. The conference will be a five-day-long event with over two hundred fifth speakers and two hundred sessions. The reason this is such a big opportunity for women in tech is that there will be lots of networking and career developing opportunities.
The Women in Tech have a larger organization that is worldwide, but the reason I am sticking to the section in Africa for this blog is that the representation of women in tech in Africa is very limited. This is a very unique event to see overseas on the continent. Women still face very severe issues when it comes to living in Africa. There have been large movements to help them take big strides but with every stride forward there is a step back. Women in Africa are still expected to live by certain societal codes. The policies created are still strictly written for the advantage of men. Women in Africa face very hard obstacles. I think that Women in Tech in Africa can do an amazing job with their conference, my only concern is that not every woman who needs the information will have access to a computer. These women are suppressed, and while they continue to be, they also continue to lack information. The information would be easier to obtain if it were held in person, but of course, Covid made that difficult. I just hope that the women who want to join the group have the ability to. They are strong women who can face any obstacle.
