Action and violent video games affect the hippocampus

A recent study has been done to test whether violent video games affect certain parts of the brain. Certain games, such as Call of Duty and Medal of honor, are proven to increase brain shrinkage. This takes place in a region called the Hippocampus. This part of the brain is also associated with spatial navigation, stress regulation, and memory. Other games such as Super Mario, Legend of Zelda, and NBA 2k increase individuals' brain growth. Instead of action, these games provide quests and missions that help develop people's visual and long-term memory. According to a study that was published in Molecular Psychiatry. Researchers asked 33 participants if they have played any video games within the past year. Each participant was scanned with an MRI and action players reported playing 19 hours a week. This is equivalent to playing for three hours a day, every day of the week. Due to the number of hours spent on these games, these individuals face a lot of less gray matter in their Hippocampus. This shows us that playing these types of games is not beneficial. People in society should limit their time spent on these games and choose games to increase brain growth.
