It’s Time to Surge Resources Into Prosecuting Ransomware Gangs

In the 1960s, the justice department grew its Organized crime and Racketeering Section to over 60 members. Initially, they only had a few members but expanded to this large amount because of criminal organizations infiltrating their operations. As criminal organizations grew, so did terrorism. Then, on September 11, 2000, a terrorist group attacked the U.S. Years later, the National Security Division was established to oversee the department. This new approach launched investigations across terrorist organizations and anyone who supported them. As a result, terrorists can no longer trust anyone within their organizations without thinking some of them are undercover cops. This new approach effectively caught anyone related to terrorist organizations, and it can be employed to detect ransomware hackers. Thus, IT companies should use the same process used to defend against terrorists for ransomware.

Given that ransomware hackers operate like terrorist organizations, the department must investigate them. When we prosecute suspected criminal organizations, they can be identified and then demolished. Malware developers, money launderers, and cybercrime forums are critical to the realm of cybercrime and ransomware.  These things can make a business lose data, so the Justice Department must follow the same guidelines that it used back in the 1960s. The department needs a wave of cyber prosecutors and agents to perform a long-term investigation on gangs of ransomware and the corporations that facilitate them. Ultimately, if we are willing to pay the modest price it requires to eliminate these hackers, we will see a better turn in the IT industry.
