On May 28th popular Tarkov Youtuber Klean hosted a podcast with the lead dev Nikita and a selection of content creators who primarily produce content relating to firearms. In the podcast they discussed the issues with the in-game meta builds for firearms, issues and changes coming to optics, and other planned features coming to Escape from Tarkov.
A major issue with Tarkov's weapon selection and modification system is that the most effective weapon builds in game are the antithesis of how guns are built out by operators in real life. In game the best gun builds are often 26 inch barrels, with a full length rail, laser system, white light, long foregrip, unpractical stock, and tiny red dot. In the real world this translate to a gun that weighs 12 pounds or more, is extremely long and impractical to use in an indoor or tight environment, and uses a cheap, tiny dot sight with terrible glass and parallax.
As for the discussion on the future changes to optics, it is planned to make optics more akin to their real world counterparts. The way optics work in game is very gamified, a dot sight is a dot sight and a scope is a scope. The planned changes will differentiate between different optics by making them more representative of their real world versions. The user will be allowed to place their optic anywhere on the firearm in game that they would in the real world, bringing all the flaws and benefits that come with such a change, such as eye relief and obstruction to field of view.
Nikita also mentioned how character and server selection is planned to work in the final version of Escape from Tarkov. It is planned to give the player 4 characters, 2 for each faction across 2 servers. What is special about this is that one server will be a persistent game state where the game will never wipe, while the other server will wipe seasonally. This allows the player to choose what gameplay style they want to experience since many users feel that early wipe Tarkov is the best way to play.
